Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such medications must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
